Numbers 31-32

The Lord  tells Moses to seek Vengeance on the Midianites...this is because they were key in drawing the Isrealites into Baal worship.....pretty interesting considering that Moses was married to a Midianite and you remember that father-in-law Jethro that taught Moses to delegate?  Balaam the Sorcerer is killed....The Isrealite army brings women and children back to Moses and Moses has the non-virgins executed.  The portion of spoils from the battle are offered to God.

Then we have "transjordan tribes"  the Reubenites and Gadites and half tribe of Manasseh want to settle on this side of the Jordan rather than settling in the Promised Land.   Moses assumes they are being rebels like the parents that didn't trust God (do you blame him for jumping to conclusions after that first generation?), but they agree to help drive enemies from the Promised Land.  Moses understands the motivation and grants the land.  Pretty cool to "get" this map, huh?

Battlefields of O.T. and Dist'n of 12 Tribes (map)

Boundaries of the Tribes of Israel (map)

So, the Reubenites, Gadites and Manasseh half tribe stayed to the "right" of the Jordan when the Promised Land was to the "left" of the Jordan........
