So what would you do if you were walking along looking for your Daddy's pick up truck (the donkey was the pick up truck of that day)and you run into someone that says they have a message from God for you? Next thing you know, you are announced the first King of Isreal? Now there is a day! You see the Holy Spirit coming on someone again in power...aren't you just so glad that you have the Holy Spirit that is a permanent dweller in your heart? Thank you Jesus!
Saul ends up rescuing the city of Jabesh and he is confirmed as King...(the process for the first king is a) get annointed by a prophet b)have the tribes select you by lot...remember the Urim and Thummim that the High Priest uses to find God's will? and c) confirmation. See 11:14)
Samuel continued to serve as priest, prophet and judge, but Saul began to take more military control of the tribes....Carefully observe Sauls's character in your reading...he will struggle constantly with jealousy, insecurity, impulsiveness and deceit...
Samuel reminds the people they did evil by wanting a human king and God made a miraculous thunderstorm that could destroy crops.....our Lord was a tad bit displeased....
That's a Man of War jelly fish.....do you feel like Leviticus is DEEP.....lots of rules. Lots of Law....God is teaching the people how to approach him....Hang in there....
Look what comes up from the depths of the sea.

well....as of now....I guess I can understand why he would struggle with insecurity....I mean...out of nowhere he is selected as king.....that would be kinda intimidating to yourself. And then some questioned "How can this man save us?" So they despised him, and brought him no presents. But he held his peace>" (Ch. 10:27...
ReplyDeleteAs far as the poking the eye out thing......my complete idiots guide to the bible says that blinding was a form of humiliation for a newly conquered people. Usually it was the right eye. And sometimes they would chop off the thumbs and big toes. YIKES!!
And I guess he was impulsive when in the field he heard about this poking eyes out, he sent a loud and clear message for those not willing to follow him and Samuel into battle. This may have been impulsive, but it worked.
