At last we get beyond geneologies and poems! Something for everyone, I know....but the history of the stories and characters resonate with me so much more.
2 Samuel lines up with 1 Chronicles...in fact, 2 Samuel 5: 1-10 is almost word for word the same as 1 Chronicles 11......when things repeat, God wants us to take notice. The NIV uses the word compact which is a covenant word.....in fact covenant is used in the NRSV. See 1 Chronicles 11:3 and 2 Samuel 5:3. I mark the word covenant wherever I find it in the Bible.....David is King of Judah first.....the largest tribe and the Southernmost tribe...
now the people had never been driven out of Jerusalem when the Israelites entered the Promised Land, so 1 Chronicles 4 tells us that David finally did it....the Jebusites were driven out.....Jerusalem was called Jebus prior to David. David chose Jerusalem as his capital....it was right on a tribal border between Benjamin and Judah......Saul was a Benjamite...David was from the Judah tribe....what is going to be critical here is that Jesus will be from the tribe of Judah.....NOT the tribe of Levi......he is a new order of things.....not the law which does not save....more to come on this but tuck it away..
Jerusalem becomes the City of David and the Lord is with him and he steadily becomes more powerful...we learn of David's Mighty Men and warriors join David.....even from the tribe of Benjamin, which is Saul's tribe.....now the tribes were divided, but they all come together now in unity, supporting David.
My NRSV points out this this banquet is symbolic of the banquet mentioned in Revelation, where the bridegroom (Jesus) and his bride (the church) have a banquet on Mt. Zion...every knee bows....everyone will know that Crist is the Lord.
Also noteworthy is that the Spirit comes on Amasai, Chief of David's Thirty....when there was an important job to be done, God chose a person to do it and gave that person special power.....at Pentacost, all Believers got the Holy spirit who is in us everyday......you saw that the Holy Spirit left Saul......may that never happen to us....we are sealed right now, Thank God....the Holy Spirit is in us and we are a temple for the Holy Spirit.....we are not our own.......not what our culture teaches, huh?
Zion will be used for Jerusalem in many of the Scriptures......Zion, many times is known as the New Jerusalem......this is when Jesus comes back.....Bonnie, is your head blowing off yet? Any questions?
That's a Man of War jelly fish.....do you feel like Leviticus is DEEP.....lots of rules. Lots of Law....God is teaching the people how to approach him....Hang in there....
Look what comes up from the depths of the sea.

Yes....I am getting confused but trying my best to follow along.....when it gets into all the chapters of all the sons and the family line......that is just too much for me.....so basically all the names and places kinda gets me confused at times....your blogs really help out.....and of course my complete idiot book i have.....one question I do have....I hav seen this a few times in the Psalms....what is "Selah" that is in my bible to the right of some verses?
ReplyDeleteSo basically I am to understand that David is a King and follows he Lord and has taken over places that could not be taken over before....and he has now taken over Jerusalem and King David is a good guy. And all of Isreal is happy because of the land he has conquered and most of the people follow the laws of the Lord. Am I on track or lost again?
Wasn't Saul the one earlier who killed someone because they killed his brother? And now he has died?
HELP!!
Selah is generally thought to be a musical term in Psalms that means pause, take a break and reflect, or pause for a musical interlude....
ReplyDeleteYou are right on about David....we'll learn more, but is is arguably the best king the Israelites had.......God loves him because he is obedient....when he screws up, he doesn't make excuses and repents...
Saul is King Saul that tries to kill David and is the father of Jonathan...
