This shows how seriously God expects us to take our relationship with him....

Year of the Jubilee...this was supposed to be celebrated every 50 years. It included canceling all debts, freeing all slaves, and returning to its original owners all land that had been sold. There is no indication in teh Bible that the Year of Jubilee was ever carried out!!! If Isreal had followed this practice faithfully, they would have been a society without permanent propery...Individual and family responsibility for the poor was crucial since there was no government aid.
Note the way 25:55 concludes:
for the Isrealites belong to me as servants. They are my servants, whom I brought out of Egypt. I am the Lord your God.
You read all the references to "redeem"....this means "buy back"......Jesus will ultimately do just that when he hangs on the cross for us, meanwhile God has servants to proclaim him for that time and place........the Isrealites were to know God and they were to serve the Lord (just as we are). God "owns" us. We are not our own...this is very counter to our culture today....
I was shocked when the man got stoned....was not expecting that......
ReplyDeleteSo am I to understand that God is stating all these things.....Sabbath and Seventh Year and Year of Jubilee......but we haven't acutally got to the part when it happens? He is just saying what would happen if they followed his rules and laws? Am I thinking correct here?
My bible says we are His children and his servants....one speaks of privilege, the other of duty.....
Actually, the Year of the Jubilee is the only one that we don't see evidence of in the Bible...it was supposed to happen every 50 years....
ReplyDeleteLove the comments from your Bible about "one speaks of privilege, the other of duty..."
