Job17-20

Yep...Bonnie has a good question about resurrection from yesterday.  It is confusing because to me, Job knows something about resurrection.   However, Old Testament time really didn't have a fully developed idea of what this was.  Jesus had not conquered death, and most of them believed it was OVER when you died.  Even my two Bible translations handle it differently.  At no point does the NSRV even mention resurrection in the study notes.  My NIV does   Let's take Chapter 19:25-27.....NIV says

I know that my Redeemer liver
and that in the end he will stand upon the earth
And after my skin has been destroyed
yet in my flesh I will see God
I myself will see him
with my own eyes-I, and not another.
How my heart yearns within me!

To me, this smacks of resurrection!!!!  We will have resurrected bodies when Christ comes again.   We will live in those resurrected bodies forever, in the presence of God.  Now, we don't know who "taught" Job, but someone did, because Chapter 1 tells us that he was "blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil".

My study notes in the NIV say, "When the book of Job was written, Israel did not have a well-developed doctrine of the resurrection".   Job knew something of it, I think....perhaps not fully developed.  Think of Isaiah...he prophesied that the Christ Child would come (Isaiah 9: 6-7)....we know that prophets prophesied, but can you imagine, many of them never saw their words come to pass......can you imagine preaching about something without really knowing the words that were coming out of your mouth?    Take Noah for example, the Lord told him to build an ark...there had never been any rain.   Scripture tells us it was a period of about 120 years of second chances while Noah tried to get people to turn from their evil ways.  They didn't, it rained, the end for most of the world.  The prophets knew what they said was true, but didn't have full understanding of it.  Somehow, God inspired them.....so, aren't you glad you live in the times that you do....we have the Bible and more background information...we have to trust that it happened, not that it was GOING TO happen.....thoughts?

  1. Ok....am I on track with this?

My bible says we all suffer adversity for many reasons.......but everyone does because we live in a fallen world. Job was a good man but lost everything and had huge suffering.......lost family, reputation, health. But he continued to trust in God........

Zophar and Naamathite really lay it out for the wicked man....... they must believe in Hell at this point because they say 20:26-29

Total darkness is reserved for his treasures. An unfanned fire will consume him; It shall go ill with him who is left in his tent. The heavens will reveal his iniquity, And the earth will rise up against him. The increase of his house will depart, And his goods will flow away in the day of His wrath. This is the portion from God for a wicked man. The heritage appointed to him by God.

Is this what you see at this point? But Job seems to still have faith in God and continue to trust in him . he asks his friends to not persecute him as God has...19:21-22....... So he thinks God has done this to him, but still trusts in God and knows there is a judgment.....

  2. Yep....I agree with you....Zophar was wrong in directing his tirade against Job, but he was correct in talking about the final end of evil people. God will definitely judge evil people...it may not be in their lifetime. My study bible refers me to Psalm 21:9:

At the time of your appearing
you will make them like a fiery furnace.
In his wrath the Lord will swallow them up,
and his fire will consume them. (referring to the wicked)

Job's friends were supposed to be "wise" men....they knew their stuff, but they were applying it wrong, I think. They believe Job is a sinner and isn't admitting to it and has brought this on himself by his actions somehow.

Job still trusts in God...though he does think God has done this to him....the reader (us) have inside knowledge about the conversation with Satan and Job...

  3. It's nice to come back to read the comments from last year. The statements / questions that you and Bonnie have made have been some of mine also. You both clarified what I was gpoing to ask. One ? Though and I know this is trivial in verse 17 Job mentioned his wife. So I am assuming she was still living and the family he spoke of must have been brothers, sisters etc.?

  4. I'm glad the conversation from last year is helpful...that was exactly my intention because Bonnie asked such good questions.
Yes, Job's wife remained alive and it was the children that died.

  5. What is going on in the world during the time that this book was written? Scholars think that Job was written somewhere during 2000-1800 BC. In 2500BC Egyptians discovered papyrus and ink for writing and built the first libraries; iron objects were manufactured in the ancient Near East. In 2400 Egyptians import gold from Africa. In 2331 Semitic chieftain, Sargon, conquers Sumer to become first "world conqueror". In 2300 horses were domesticated in Egypt; chickens were domesticated in Babylon; and bows & arrows were used in wars....in 2100 glass was made by the Mesopotamians; ziggurats (like the tower of Babel) were built in Mesopotamia; earliest discovered drug, ethyl alcohol was used to alleviate pain. In 2000BC Native Americans immigrate to North America from Northern Asia; stock-breeding and irrigation is used in China; Stonehenge, England becomes a center for religious worship; bellows in India were used for higher furnace temperatures. In 1900BC Egyptians use irrigation systems to control Nile floods; spoked wheel invented in the ancient Near East; horses were used to pull vehicles. So, we have come from Creation and Noah building the ark.....those two events are undated, but man has progressed with his tools and domestication, so this is why Job can be a prosperous farmer (before his tests).

  7. I have a wonderful study bible: Life Application Study Bible and it has a timeline that runs across the front that puts world happenings with the scripture happenings. I love that kind of stuff to orient me, because I was thinking of Job as a more primitive man. Actually, lots of inventions had been discovered that must have allowed him to be such a prosperous farmer.
