Isaiah 59-63

God can do anything, but in this case, sin (iniquities) had separated Israel from God...there was no one to step up and lead the people out of sin so God said that He would raise someone up himself, and we read about Jesus in verse 17.

The theme of Chapter 60 is that The world and its powers will not be in charge (got that from a sermon that Alan did!)  Look at all the promises in this chapter (circle all the "will"s)...Zion is described...

Chapter 61 is amazing, because Jesus will stand in the synagogue in the New Testament and read from a scroll

The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me
because the Lord has anointed me
to preach good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisonors
to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.

He will tell people that the scripture has been fufilled in their hearing.  Wonder how you would have felt if you heard this?

Chapter 62 is where Zion gets a new name....Hephzibah which means my delight is in her, and Beulah which means married

Chapter 63 is where God has vengeance (not us) and redemption (buying back from sin) and He will do this through Jesus...look at verse 5
I looked, but there was no one to help,
I was appalled that no one gave support;
so my own arm worked salvation for me.

In verse 9, the "angel of his presence" is the baby that would be born in Bethlehem and save the world...

Trivia:  did you know that Isaiah mentions the work of the Holy Spirit more than any other Old Testament writer?   This is in the day before the Holy Spirit was in all believers....He certainly existed and did his work, but people were still under the Old covenant....Jesus had not yet come to redeem.....

  1. another hard to read............
but i did underline the "I will"

the Lord will arise over you.
His glory will be seen upon you.
I will make you an eternal excellence.
    I will bring silver.
I will also make your officers peace.
The Lord will be to you an everlasting light.

I think my favorite verse in this section was 61:11

"For as the earth brings forth its bud, As the garden causes he things that are sown in it to spring forth, so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations" I can't wait for righteousness and praise everywhere instead of war and violence.
