Psalm 81/88/92-93

Psalm 81 is apparently a holiday hymn.....it reminds Israel of her history (and us) and what God has done. Again, you see how David introduced music to worship.....Verse 7 "I answered you out of a thundercloud" refers to Exodus 19:19....God answered Moses and they had a little chat on Mt. Sinai.
"I tested you at the waters of Meribah" refers to Exodus 17:7 where the traveling Israelites were cranky and wanted water and tested God........God let the people be stubborn and the Israelites learned the consequences of sin the hard way....if they had listened to God, things would have been a whole easier for them......any lesson for us here?
Psalm 88 is a real bummer.....the psalmist is feeling so low that he sees no relief in sight. this Psalm is unique in that there is no praise....just raw, powerful emotion. these are honest thoughts and God can handle them.....He already knows how you feel so expressing honest emotion is part of having an authentic relationship.

psalm 92 is about being thankful every day...

psalm 93....I love the NRSV notes which say, " In the ancient Near East, Kings wore distinctive garments to indicate their power. As heavenly king, the Lord is robed in power itself.

I didn't get the imagery of seas being lifted up and research says that God's power is grater than that of the waters(shoot, He created them) God established dry ground by overcoming the water......see the account of Creation in Genesis where the Spirit hovered over the water.....no dry land yet! pretty cool.....
