Isn't it interesting that Pastor Alan preached on freedom and we are reading about captivity? I love how God makes us look at things by pulling them together from different places. Doing what God wants gives us freedom....those with a flesh/earthly perspective see God's rules as freedom-taking rather than freedom-giving...our spiritual eyes can show us how God really wants us to be free in Him.....abundant life (whether here or in heaven) can be ours.
God promises restoration in these chapters. There is some more of "In that day". Like Isaiah, Jeremiah had near and far fulfillment in his scripture. Yes, it was about freedom from Babylon in the shorter term, but it was about all of us in the long term, when Christ comes again. Try reading these 2 chapters with YOU in mind. The best part is the following scripture, which you will read again in Hebrews:
The time is coming, declares the Lord,
when I will make a new covenant
with the house of Israel
and with the house of Judah
It will not be like the covenant
I made with their forefathers
when I took them by the hand
to lead them out of Egypt
because they broke my covenant,
though I was a husband to them, declares the Lord
This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel
after that time, declares the Lord
I will put my law in their minds
and write it on their hears.
I will be their God,
and they will be my people.
No longer will a man teach his neighbor,
or a man his brother, saying, "Know the Lord,"
because they will all know me
from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord.
Oh yeah, the new covenant is prophesied here, and Jesus is the basis of the new covenant.....It has been God's plan all along....God knew the people would break the Old Covenant.....the Holy Spirit is going to eventually help man to know God one- on- one....
