The author of this book is Moses. It takes place at the foot of Mt. Sinai, where they people camped for about two years.
The first word in the book of Leviticus (Lev) is its Hebrew title, translated leterally: He (the Lord) Called"
The key verse is "Be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy" (19:2). The Hebrew term for holy appears more times (152) than in any other book of the Bible.
This is a whole book dedicated to worship. We were created to have a relationship with God, but God can't be near sin. We have to recognize and deal with sin before we can approach God. The 10 commandments were given to help us recognize sin. We aren't to be pagan, we are to be set apart (holy) as God's people.
This is all a huge foreshadowing to Jesus, the perfect lamb (sacrifice), the ultimate sacrifice.
God is teaching His people how to approach Him.
My bible say that this book is God's guidebook for his people, showing them how to worship, serve, and obey God.
